Biography

Hanne is an American-British contemporary painter (b. 1984, Pittsburgh, PA, USA) based in London, England. She works primarily with acrylic on primed and raw canvas, building surfaces through brushwork, hand-painted gestures, and marks made with found natural objects. With formal training in Graphic Design (BFA, MA) and a background in creative direction, Hanne brings a refined sense of form, colour, and composition to her painterly language. Her paintings seek to evoke an abstract, embodied experience of nature rather than a literal depiction of landscape.

Rooted in memories of the northern Appalachian forests of her childhood, Hanne’s practice emerges from a desire to return inwardly to the landscapes that first shaped her sense of place. After years spent in urban environments, her work reflects an effort to rewild creative and spiritual life through painting. Recollections of woodland spaces, weather, shifting elements, and transient moments in nature recur as motifs. Her work is characterised by expressive brushwork, surfaces shaped through movement, and earth-toned palettes.

Central to Hanne’s practice is an interest in the relationship between outer landscapes and inner states of being. Through layered strokes, atmospheric texture, and carefully balanced arrangements, she creates paintings in which memory settles into peace and inward reflection. Painting functions as an act of meditation in which controlled formal decisions meet instinctive marks, creating a distinctive tension between structure and spontaneity, restraint and immersion. Hanne’s works resonate with stillness, presence, and a profound connection to the natural world.
